Innovation for Developing Countries
The main theme of the Triple Helix 10th International Conference 2012 (TH 2012) is: "Emerging Triple Helix Models for Developing Countries: from Conceptualisation to Implementation".
TH 2012 is the tenth in a series of international conferences that was started sixteen years ago. The Triple Helix International Conference Series is an initiative of the Triple Helix Association (visit the website here).
At Triple Helix events, innovation practitioners from around the globe meet to analyse the influence of the interaction among the entities of university, government, and business, on the economic development of specific regions. During the TH 2012 Conference, the topic will focus on innovation by "Triple Helix" entities in the developing world that will be enriched with the additional perspective of the involvement of the general society.
With an expected attendance of more than 400 participants, including academics, policy makers, and practitioners, the conference programme will include interactive meetings and discussions on critical issues related to the triple helix concept and its concrete implementation, especially in the context of developing countries, such as Indonesia.
TH 2012 will offer a platform for participants to discuss, involved in topics of dialogues of common interest, interact and assess triple helix interactions and implementations. The Conference will give an opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, develop ties and establish avenues for future cooperation.

TH 2012: Solving Real Challenges in Collaboration
The objective of TH 2012 is to present real issues, real deliberations, and real solutions for the Triple Helix interactions in developing countries.
Innovation in developing countries is perceived as the work of small groups or isolated individuals, and is seen as risky to manage. Therefore, developing countries, in a policy context, have an immediate need for bolstering collaboration in order to apply the Triple Helix concept.
At present few developing countries have material, economic, or conceptual resources, to be even close to becoming sustainable sources of innovation. Inter-dependencies with the advanced economies are unavoidable; while there is a huge motivation to share capabilities, expertise, and information to satisfy the demands of globalised markets and local customization in the developing world.
Rather than relying on the R&D Sector alone to support economic growth, the developing countries need to build a culture of establishing solutions for the processing, analysis, technology development, and infrastructure growth, in order to shape the adequate innovation capacities to collaborate with advanced economies.
There are two examples of innovation centers in Indonesian that are excellent sources for incubating and implementing the Triple Helix concepts:
- Solo Technopark (STP) in the Province of Central Java, Indonesia, and
- Jababeka Industrial Park Area ("Kawasan Industri Jababeka") in Cikarang, West Java.
In addition to this, there is the National Science Park (Puspiptek), located in Serpong, Tangerang that has the capacity to be developed further to become a productive S&T Park in the future. The above facilities, and many others similar to them, signify Indonesia's greater commitment and dedication to develop and apply THC in the future.
Why hold TH 2012 in Indonesia?
The obvious reason is that Indonesia is a developing country that boasts a number of "firsts". With its large size, Indonesia offers developing countries around the world an exemplar for instant-lessons to be learned. It is the largest archipelago in the world, with over 17,500 islands stretching more than 5,000 kilometers from west to east. The country includes three of the six largest islands in the world: Western Half of Papua, three fourth of Borneo, and Sumatera.
Indonesia has more integrated biodiversity than any other country on Earth. The country is extremely rich in natural resources - including spices, timber, agricultural products, petroleum, natural gas, and other minerals. It is also an important source of cheap labour.
With a staggering population of 237 million (BPS, 2010), Indonesia offers a huge market for global industrial powers to compete. As the 16th largest economy in the world, Indonesia, as the second largest democracy in Asia, holds great promise of becoming one of the most competitive countries in the world.
According to the National "Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Growth (MP3EI)" (PDF), Indonesia is currently boosting self-sufficiency, to become one of the most advanced and prosperous of global powers. This vision will be achieved through highly focussed approaches and significant investment to innovation.
The Triple Helix 10th International Conference 2012 is a conference where you can meet and greet leading figures and acknowledged experts from academia, business, and government, as well as community groups to discuss the development and implementation of innovation in developing countries.
